Lake Kawaguchiko (河口湖) is the Fuji Five Lakes base most visitors use: Kawaguchiko Station, the end of the Fujikyuko Line, is near its eastern shore, and trains and highway buses run there from Tokyo in about two hours. It has the longest shoreline of the five lakes, and the shore is free. On clear days Mount Fuji rises to the south across the water, best seen from the north shore around Oishi Park.

How the lake works for a visit
Kawaguchiko is a lake-level visit rather than a single sight. The north shore faces Mount Fuji across the water, which is why Oishi Park and the shore around it are where most of the classic photographs are taken. The south and east shores, around Kawaguchiko Station, hold most of the hotels, the sightseeing cruise and the ropeway. Unoshima, a small island, sits in the middle of the lake.
Mount Fuji is the reason to come, and it is often hidden. Cloud tends to build through the day, summer brings haze, and the rainy season from mid-June to mid-July is the weakest time. Winter mornings give the best odds. On a cloudy day the lake still works as a base for museums and onsen, but if you can stay a night, keep the next morning free for a second try.

Things to do at Lake Kawaguchiko
Walk the north shore for the Fuji view
The north shore looks straight across the lake at Mount Fuji. Oishi Park, with its 350-meter flower walk, is the easiest place to start, and the retro bus from Kawaguchiko Station takes about 30 minutes.
Take the sightseeing cruise
A short sightseeing cruise leaves from the east shore near the station. It shows the lake and Unoshima from the water; whether Mount Fuji appears depends on the weather, as everywhere here.
Ride the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
The ropeway climbs Mount Tenjo from the east shore for a view over the lake toward Mount Fuji. It is a separate paid ride; the ropeway guide covers fares, the November 2026 fare change and inspection closures.
Get around by retro bus or bicycle
Retro-style sightseeing buses run from Kawaguchiko Station around the lake. On a dry day a rental bicycle is a pleasant way to link the east and north shores.
Visit a museum on a cloudy day
Two north-shore museums work when the mountain is hidden: the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, devoted to the kimono artist, and the Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum. Check their opening days before you go.
Stay a night for a morning attempt
If seeing Mount Fuji is the point of the trip, a night by the lake gives you a second chance the next morning, when the mountain is more often clear.
How to Get to Lake Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchiko is in Fujikawaguchiko, Yamanashi Prefecture, roughly two hours from central Tokyo by direct train or highway bus.
By train from Tokyo
Direct JR trains, including the Fuji Excursion limited express from Shinjuku, run through onto the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station. Otherwise take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki and change to the Fujikyuko Line. The Japan Rail Pass covers the JR tracks only; the Fujikyuko section needs a separate fare.
By highway bus
Highway buses run from Busta Shinjuku and other Tokyo terminals to Kawaguchiko Station. See the highway bus guide for booking and finding the right stop.
Around the lake
Retro sightseeing buses leave from Kawaguchiko Station for the shore attractions, including Oishi Park (about 30 minutes). Taxis wait at the station, and bicycles can be rented nearby.
By car
The Kawaguchiko Interchange on the Chuo Expressway is close to the lake. Expect busy parking at shoreline viewpoints on clear weekends and in blossom and foliage seasons. For tolls and rental advice see the rental car guide.
